OK, so to bring you up-to-date....
Slapsy Maxie's opened in August of 1988 and was owned by Vince and Jenny DelChico, previous Columbus bar owners. It was named after the late boxer-turned-actor "Slapsy Maxie" Rosenbloom. (See "About" link for more history on Max). The concept of this neighborhood pub was based loosely on the attitude and presence that Max had portrayed...friends, laughter and good times...and the fact that Vince had been a fan of pugilism.
Slapsy's immediately drew patrons in with it's notoriety of having friendly bartenders, great service, excellent drinks, and comfortable atmosphere. The Irish pub-like feel created by the bountifully adorned walls provided a perfect meeting place for friends to gather. Over the years, the DelChico's had enhanced the the feel by doubling the size of the bar and introducing live music from local artists. This transition allowed for the continued play of gamers who enjoyed playing pool, darts, foosball and a variety of video games, while at the the same time stepping up the night-time entertainment from jukebox to live music. From there, they continued to improve on the venue by adding a wood patio off of the back, to provide an ideal spot to enjoy a cold drink on a nice spring or summer evening.
In December '06, the DelChico's sold the bar to Matt Sutton and migrated southward to Florida, where they have since opened and are operating a bar called Average Joe's in Jupiter. Sutton, being a long-time patron and friend of the DelChico's (and have had played the club for years both acoustically and with band, FAT DOG), jumped at the chance of carrying on the tradition.
Continuing in the footsteps of his predecessors, Sutton has worked on updating and improving the layout of the bar. Being a musician, he felt it obvious to rearrange the stage layout. In the summer of 2007, the new stage was built, sound and lighting installed and a sound booth constructed. Slapsy's had become Columbus' newest premiere live music venue. In addition, a 100" big screen TV has been installed to enable viewing of your favorite sports from any angle...that is, if you're having trouble with any of the other 15 TV's.
As of early 2008, a heated patio with awning has been erected for our long-time smoking customers who need a break without having to bundle up to brave the elements.
These changes have all been made to create a more comfortable environment and pleasurable live music experience for our patrons, be it first timer or long-time regular.
We are proud to staff some of the most friendly and knowledgable bartenders in the city as well, so come by and check us out for our daily happy hour, one of our many nights of live entertainment, or when you just happen to be in the neighborhood. We'll be here for ya!
